One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Phil is, “you’ve got to name it to claim it.” This means two things to me:
- You can’t change something within yourself that you don’t acknowledge.
- You can’t expect to get what you want if you don’t even know what that something is.
If you’re struggling with this acknowledging and knowing, it is time to allow yourself to be led by love. I feel the eye rolling that has most surely come about by those who are misinterpreting that as a touchy-feely statement, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. The kind of love I’m talking about is a knowing that comes from a higher level of yourself that strives to communicate with you and express your true desires. It’s a gut instinct that comes naturally but we tend to push away due to our mind’s tendency to want to make everything “logical”. In other words, “it only makes sense if it makes sense to everybody else.” In order to name what is beckoning to be acknowledged in order to reveal what it is you want, you must be willing to be guided by this higher love rather than the need to be understood by your peers. This will not come without effort. The desire to be understood by others is so deeply ingrained in most of us that until our eyes have been opened to it, we are unaware that a different method of perception and direction even exists. But it does. And once your own eyes have been opened to it, you will forever more feel the pull of the force within against the force of the external and endeavor to choose which force to align with. It is not a matter of right or wrong, only a matter of choice. Allowing yourself to be led by love will anoint you with the strength you need to not require the understanding of others. Think of this type of understanding as dessert: it’s a nice treat when you get it, but it’s not necessary for sustainment.
