Outcome? Release it

expectation

I’m going to tell you one thing you can do today that will allow you to reach your goals. It’s not a new concept and it’s one I’ve referred to many times on this blog, but it bears repeating. In many instances applying this practice will go against what you’ve been conditioned to believe and your natural response will be to dispute it, but if your current methods are not yielding the results you’d anticipated, perhaps it’s time to think outside the box. Then again, is there ever NOT a good time to think outside the box? Not as far as I’m concerned, but let’s not lose our focus here… What is this one thing?

1. STOP FOCUSING ON THE OUTCOME

That’s it. There’s only one number on this list, because that one thing is the only thing you need to do. Now, I don’t know about you, but whenever somebody gives me a tip to follow and it involves stopping something, there is no use in my even pretending that I can stop anything without a substitution. So what is your new focus if it’s not on the outcome? Your new focus is…drumroll here

DOING WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING

You know what that is. Yes, you do. There is a voice within that has been prompting you to do what you know you need to do and you need to listen to it. With no rationalizations or excuses. Yeah, that’s the hard part. If you’ve gone blank reading this and wish that I was standing in front of you so that you can explain to me how you “really don’t know” what you’re supposed to be doing and you feel you are the exception to this method of thinking, I urge you to stop what you’re doing right now and breathe. Relax your body and clear your mind completely. If you can be outside, by all means get out there, but it’s not a requirement. You will note that I pretty much always think being outside helps. With everything. Picture the goal you have for yourself in your mind and ASK to be shown one action you need to be taking right now that will move you forward on the path toward your goal. The mistake we make is when we expect to be shown the entire action plan at once and refuse to take the first steps because we can’t see the last steps or every step in between. Take a note from Martin Luther King Jr. on this:

Now, don’t tell me you don’t have faith, because you do. Do you drive a motor vehicle? Would you continue to drive if you didn’t have faith that the other drivers were going to stop at stop signs and red lights? This is a faith you easily take for granted until the day another driver DOESN’T stop at that red light and t-bones your unsuspecting self merrily driving along in your beloved old Toyota Camry. BOOM! Take my word for it- though I was remarkably fortunate enough to walk away from this event uninjured save for a few cuts and scrapes, it did and does take time to build that faith back up again, but I found out quickly that there is no forward movement without faith. The higher part of yourself is ALREADY aware that you are not fully in control. Your earthly side takes a little more convincing…

By focusing on the action, getting to your goal becomes about the journey. You are given opportunity to feel gratification for the growth you experience with every step you take forward and even those that set you back a bit. Especially those! Focusing on the outcome limits your results to become about the destination. Now, would you really want to rush somewhere uneventfully if it meant turning down a good road trip? I didn’t think so.
